Canton Restaurant - Cháo Cá Chợ Cũ is a straightforward, no-frills spot nestled in the heart of Westminster’s Little Saigon area, specializing in Vietnamese and Cantonese comfort food with a particular focus on porridge and rice dishes. This is the kind of place where regulars come for a steady, warming meal rather than fancy dining — think of it as a neighborhood anchor for serious eaters who appreciate authentic flavors without distractions.

The restaurant’s atmosphere is bright and clean, though modest—typical of smaller family-run eateries in the area. It doesn’t try to do much beyond serving hearty bowls and sizzling plates, which works well here. Service tends to be friendly and welcoming, often with the owner around, giving it a familiar, low-key vibe. A practical note: it's cash only, so come prepared.

If you’re drawn to traditional rice porridge (cháo), this spot offers a variety of satisfying options. The fish porridge with pork blood is frequently recommended by locals for its generous portions and comforting balance, especially when paired with fried Chinese donuts on the side — these add a necessary crunch and saltiness that brightens the meal. The Hong Kong Style Beef Chow Fun stands out too, with a noticeable hint of charcoal broil that gives the dish a smoky depth, though it can feel a touch oily. Those dishes highlight the kitchen’s knack for balancing Cantonese influences with Vietnamese tastes.

For something a little heartier, the barbecue fish served sizzling on a hot platter is another way to experience the flavors here, presenting a mix of smoky grilled meat and fresh herbs. Other popular items include various fried rice options and noodle dishes, which cater well to diners looking for a familiar taste of home-style cooking.

The best time to visit is during a quieter weekday lunch when you can enjoy a warm bowl of porridge in peace, but expect a steady flow of locals throughout the week as this spot fills a niche for affordable comfort food in the area. While it’s not a fancy sit-down restaurant, its straightforward, unpretentious nature is exactly why it works for those wanting a genuine meal without fuss.

Overall, Canton Restaurant fits neatly into Westminster’s vibrant, food-focused community by offering accessible, comforting dishes anchored in tradition, ideal for anyone craving a solid, flavorful meal of Vietnamese and Cantonese staples served with a bit of neighborhood warmth.

Food: We tried three things 1) We try the HK style beef chow fun and it was really amazing a must try here. You can taste the charcoal broiled taste and it was well seasoned. Might be a little oily though but the taste is very nice 5/5 2) Next is fish Congee with pork blood on sides. The presentation is nice and taste is average but I try putting little hotsauce and fish sauce to add flavor and it went well 4/5 3) Chinese Donut is a must too. taste blend well with the congee and taste is reallu 5/5. Service: When we came in it was not too crowded so the order was done pretty fast so service is 5/5 Ambiance: It was nice and clean like typical vietnamese restaurant nothing fancy. Parking: A lot of parking space.

First time here because we wanted porridge. Went on a weekday. The porridge is comforting and the egg rolls were yums.

that fish, worth the drive and so are their congee. Decent service, the owner is welcoming and friendly. Your typical hole in the wall space but it is clean and bright. I definitely recommend a visit.

The pork blood and added fish congee was super good and there’s other options too! I added fish to my pork blood congee but even if not it was great the pieces of pork blood were HUGE and so was the fish and super delicious hella worth visiting actually better than Chinese versions of the same dish, somehow the Vietnamese just do everything better even Cantonese dishes Also got an iced coffee which was good too :P

This place is a comforting and affordable restaurant that serves Vietnamese food. It’s my go-to place for chao, and they come served in cute bowls that hold heat well, so there’s no need to worry about your food going cold before you finish. My favorite side to add is the fried Chinese donuts! Heads up, the restaurant is cash only!

I stopped in at Chạo Cá Chò Cú in Westminster after hearing so much buzz, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The place was packed with mostly Chinese and Vietnamese locals, which to me is always the best sign that a restaurant is doing something right. The atmosphere was busy but still welcoming, and the staff were extremely friendly and attentive even with so many tables to take care of. What really stood out for me was their vegetable chow fun. The noodles weren’t quite as wide or as thick as I expected, but they were still cooked beautifully—chewy, flavorful, and full of that smoky wok aroma that makes chow fun special. The vegetables were fresh and plentiful, and the whole dish came together in a way that was absolutely delicious. A lot of restaurants don’t even serve proper chow fun noodles, but this place does, and it makes a big difference. The menu itself is a unique mix of Chinese and Vietnamese dishes, which gives you a lot of options depending on what you’re in the mood for. Everything I saw coming out of the kitchen looked generous and authentic, and it’s clear why this spot is so popular among locals. One thing to note: they don’t take credit cards, so make sure you bring cash or be ready to pay by Zelle. It’s worth the extra step because the food and service really deliver. If you’re in Westminster and want to experience a local favorite with excellent chow fun and a lively crowd, this is the place to go.

Canton Restaurant impressed me with its comforting congee served in traditional clay pots. The porridge was smooth and flavorful, topped with fresh ginger and herbs. The fried dough sticks were perfectly crispy and paired well with condensed milk. A warm, satisfying breakfast spot with authentic flavors.
